The Cohen Hearings: Is This Who We Are?

Art by Rob Goldstein

I’ve spent most of the day watching Michael Cohen give testimony.

He seems tormented and determined to redeem himself.

This felt like a day of reckoning for Michael Cohen and the American people.

The President represents the People; and our ‘ethos’ as a People is an expression of who we are as individuals.

Donald Trump is a sadistic crook: is that who we are as individuals?

“When we’re dancing with the angels, the question will be asked: In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing?”  Rep. Elijah Cummings, February 22, 2019

  1. There is a part of me that feels sorry for Cohen and another part that feels like he is getting what he deserves. He had to of known right from wrong and I guess now he has several years to figure out how to make his life better. Now, Trump makes me absolutely and totally SICK! I understand he is the president of the United States, but he will never be mine. He is a terrible man and keeps doing horrible things to the country I know. I have dreams of him being escorted out of the white house in hand cuffs!!

  2. For any systemic abuse survivors, I think it’s all too easy to look at a system that turned a blind eye to abuse – or helped perpetuate it – and go “umm, yeah.” But, I read on one of the analyses that Cohen’s reference to the Holocaust is actually more significant than it might seem. Supposedly the detention of children at the border and what they went through was one of the final straw that pushed Cohen over into full cooperation. It was too close to history repeating itself. If that’s true, I wonder less about what it shows about most people – I’m not surprised at all by that – but actually what minor miracle led to even one of those people (aka Cohen) actually being able to realize the impact of what he’d done and try and balance the scales…
